We pour the driveway once the house is watertight and the builder’s traffic is off the section, because a slab laid too early takes a hammering it was never designed for. The finished level has to meet the garage floor and shed water away from the door.
A standard driveway goes down at 100 mm of 20 MPa over compacted basecourse, with 665 mesh held in the top third at 30 mm cover, and that carries up to 2.5 tonnes. Say at the visit if a boat, a caravan or a heavy trade vehicle will sit on it, because that changes thickness and steel.
Foundations are the part of a build that every following trade waits on, so we treat the programme as seriously as the pour itself.
We build slabs and footings to NZS 3604 and to the engineer detail where one is involved. Set-out, thickened edges, plumbing penetrations and pre-pour preparation all sit inside our part of the work. Ground conditions vary enough across Cambridge sections that the footing detail is worth confirming before the boxing goes in, so bring us in early.
Outdoor living areas are the second thing we get asked for in Cambridge after the driveway.
Falls matter more here than anywhere else on a section. Water has to leave the paved area away from the house, and around a pool the surface needs to stay walkable when wet, so a broom or lightly textured finish beats a smooth trowel.
We pour a shed floor at 100 mm as standard, and heavier where a hoist, a trailer or stacked timber will sit on them. The choice to make before quoting is whether the pad is a floor inside a building or a slab the shed gets bolted to, because that changes the edge detail and the tolerances.
Extra off-street parking beside an existing driveway is common on newer Cambridge sections with two vehicles and one entrance. We tie the new pour into the old one with a cut joint so the two panels can move independently.
Paths are the narrowest work we do. Cambridge front paths often run from a shared accessway to a raised entry, so steps and landings come into it.
A poured path holds its line and gives weeds nowhere to come through. Falls get set away from the house wall. Tell us where the downpipes discharge before we set the levels.
Exposed aggregate is the finish we lay most for owners who want the driveway to look like part of the house, with the stone washed clear of the surface, not hidden in it. It hides tyre marks and general grime far better than a plain grey finish, and the stone selection is yours to make at quoting.
The finish takes surface retarder, a wash-off and the stone you pick. Seal it after curing and re-seal it, or the surface dulls.
Not every failed surface needs replacing, and we will say so if a repair will hold.
Cracks that have stopped moving take a filled and sealed repair. Panels that rock or have dropped get cut out and re-poured to the nearest joints, so what you are left with reads as a panel rather than a patch. Resurfacing suits a slab that is sound underneath but tired on top. Send a photo before you decide, because the difference is usually visible from one.
We seal driveways and patios once the concrete has had a summer to finish drying out, which is later than most people expect.
Sealed concrete resists oil, tyre marking and the staining that comes off leaf litter, and it washes down instead of needing a scrub. A penetrating sealer soaks in and will not peel where the sun sits hardest. A surface sealer gives more gloss but needs redoing sooner. Which one suits depends on how much shade the area gets.

The $100 end of the plain range assumes clear access and ground needing no extra work, which on a new Cambridge section is not the usual starting point.

A decorative finish on a small area carries the finish premium and is quoted per job.
The ranges cover the complete job: subgrade preparation, excavation and cartage, compacted basecourse, reinforcement, the pour, the finish, joint cutting and clean-up. When you compare us against another quote, check whether the other number is supply and place only, because excavation, basecourse and drainage sitting outside a rate is what makes two quotes look further apart than they are.
House slabs and foundations, commercial slabs and hardstand, breaking out and removing existing concrete, and sealing are all quoted per job with no published figure.
Cambridge Site Conditions
A section that was a paddock two years ago is not the same subgrade as a section that has been a garden for forty. Ground gets cut, filled and driven over during a build, and service trenches run across the exact line the driveway will take. The 2023 Census recorded 69 Cambridge dwellings under construction on census night, and the town’s private dwelling count moved from 7,617 in 2018 to 8,736 in 2023, so a lot of the concrete going down here sits on recently worked ground.
What that means in practice is straightforward. We dig to firm material, not to a nominal depth, compact the base in layers, and put more basecourse under the slab where the dig shows soft or loose fill. Where a trench crosses the driveway, the backfill gets compacted properly before any basecourse goes over it, because that line is where a settlement crack will otherwise appear in the first two summers.
Cambridge work is scheduled off the same board as our city jobs, so a new-build pour usually slots into the run rather than waiting on a separate crew, which is worth knowing if you are trying to hit a code of compliance date with a Hamilton concreting company instead of juggling two contractors.

100 mm of 20 MPa concrete over compacted basecourse, with 665 mesh in the top third at 30 mm cover and joints saw cut. That carries up to 2.5 tonnes. Foot traffic after a day or two, vehicles after seven days and ten in winter, with heavy loads later than that. Concrete keeps gaining strength for weeks after it looks finished. We tell you the dates for your pour at handover, and in a cold Cambridge winter week they move out slightly.
It can, and we would rather it did not. Concrete laid while a build is still running gets hiab outriggers, scaffold and delivery trucks on it, and a 100 mm residential slab is designed for a 2.5 tonne car. If the driveway has to go in early for access, say so and we will price it thicker with heavier steel so it survives the build.
For a front driveway on a new house, most owners think so. It costs $130 to $200+ per m² against $100 to $150 for plain, and in return the stone hides tyre marks, oil spots and dirt that show plainly on grey. It does need sealing after it cures, and re-sealing later. On a back path nobody sees, plain broom is the sensible spend.
