The pattern is the easy decision. Where the surface gets wet is the one that changes the build. These are the six we are asked for most.
Stamped concrete is the strongest visual upgrade available on a front driveway, and the reason most people call us about stamping. A cobblestone or slate pattern reads as a laid surface from the street with none of the settling and weed growth real pavers bring.
The slab underneath is a normal driveway build, 100 mm of 20 MPa concrete over compacted basecourse with 665 mesh. Where the driveway reaches the road, the crossing is Council-controlled and we handle that side.
The stamped patios we lay earn their place where the area is seen from inside the house all year. Tile and plank patterns can be run to line up with the interior floor, so the eye carries straight through the ranchslider. The slab is a standard 100 mm pour, so the pattern costs nothing in strength.
Stamped is smoother than exposed aggregate once sealed, so we work a grip additive into the sealer. Say at the visit if a spa is going on it.
On the pool surrounds we stamp, the pattern choice matters more than the colour does. Deeper textured patterns hold grip better when soaking than flat tile patterns, and the sealer always carries a grip additive on a pool surround. We fall the surface away from the pool shell so splash-out drains off the coping, and finish to the classes in NZS 3114.
Tell us where the pump and pipework run before we set levels, since cutting a stamped slab afterwards destroys the pattern.
We bring pattern and colour samples to site, because that decision changes the result more than any other, and the one worth spending an afternoon on. Colour hardener gives the base tone and a release agent adds the secondary shade that makes the pattern read as stone. Colour dries lighter than the wet sample, so judge it from a cured panel outdoors.
Large patterns suit large areas and get lost on a path under 1.2 metres wide. We bring samples to the site instead of asking you to choose off a screen.
We lay stamped overlays where the existing slab is sound and only the surface is tired. It bonds a new patterned layer over the old concrete for a fraction of the $120 to $170 per square metre a new stamped slab costs.
It is the wrong answer over a cracked or rocking slab, because every crack underneath copies through the topping within a season or two. We check the slab is stable and tap it for hollow areas before we offer it.
We reseal and recolour existing stamped work, because it lives and dies on its sealer. When the sealer goes the colour flattens, the surface starts absorbing stains and the pattern loses its depth. New stamped work is sealed from 28 days, and resealing brings most tired surfaces back for a small fraction of a new one.
Where the colour itself has worn through on the high points, recolouring is possible on some surfaces and not on others, and we will tell you which you have.
Stamped Build Method
STEP ONE
We check the subgrade, the falls and the access, then bring pattern and colour samples to the property so you see them in daylight. Pattern and colour get confirmed in writing before we order, because the colour hardener is bought to your selection. The visit is free.
STEP TWO
The written quote shows up within a few days and states the slab thickness, the concrete grade, the mesh, the pattern, the colour and the joint layout. Stamping is timing-critical, so we plan the pour around the forecast and the crew size needed to press the whole area before the concrete goes off.
STEP THREE
Place, screed and float, then broadcast colour hardener and work it in. Release agent goes down and the mats are pressed while the slab is still green, which is a short window and the reason stamping needs a full crew on site. Joints get cut once the slab is hard enough. Sealing follows after the surface has dried out, usually as a separate visit.

Pavers and stamped concrete are chasing the same look from opposite directions. Pavers are individual units bedded on sand, so every unit has a joint around it. Those joints are where weeds start and where the bedding washes out, and a paved area carrying wheels will rut in time as the units move.
Stamped concrete is one slab with a pattern pressed into it, so there is nothing to move or grow through. The trade-off is repair. A damaged paver lifts out and gets replaced. A damaged stamped slab is cut and repoured, and matching a pattern and colour across that cut is difficult. Over services you will dig up again, pavers remain the better call.
Surface and Sealer
Stamping is not a coating and it is not a print. Colour hardener is worked into the surface of fresh concrete, a release agent is applied so the mats lift cleanly, and the pattern is pressed into the slab while it is still green. That window is short. It is the reason a stamped pour needs a full crew standing ready and the reason the job is booked around the weather.
Depth and consistency of the impression is the craft. Press too early and the pattern closes back up, too late and the mats leave a shallow, uneven texture that no sealer disguises. Concrete surface finishes are specified nationally under NZS 3114, and that is the reference we work to on finish quality.

Keeping It Looking New
Stamped concrete carries an ongoing maintenance cost that plain concrete does not, and it is worth knowing that before you choose it. Four things to plan for.
Sealer is what holds the colour and the depth in the pattern. It wears off under tyres and UV, and a stamped driveway in Hamilton generally wants resealing every few years. Budget for it from the start instead of treating it as a surprise.
July averages about 133 mm of rain across roughly 10 days here, so a stamped surface spends a good part of the year wet. The grip additive in the sealer is what makes that safe, and it goes back in every time the surface is resealed.
